Have you ever taken time out to think about Ghana’s 10 regions and their given names? Like every other Ghanaian, you know them off head but do you not see anything fascinatingly inappropriate about some of them?  For the purposes of this piece; the Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Eastern and Western regions are allowed to be because their names are merely geography-related and are aptly vindicated by the Ghana map. However, I have issues with the names of the other regions.

Image My issue with the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions are pretty straight forward. There is no group of people in this country who call themselves ASHANTI. There is only ASANTE. Even, in Twi, there is nothing like ‘SH’. That sound is spelt as ‘HY’. The verb ‘burn’ for example, in Twi is ‘HYE’ not ‘SHE’. So using ‘ ASHANTI’ is a disgraceful attempt by our own selves at…
